Northwestern College Uses the Pop Up Cube to Invite Donors to a Special Unveiling on Campus

For Jill Haarsma and her team at Northwestern College the challenge was this: how do you make an event for a major (and long-awaited) addition to campus as memorable as the building itself?

That’s when they happened upon Red Paper Plane.

Jill, who said the College had been fundraising for a new building for the Sciences for 18 months, knew that a marketing piece would be necessary once the building was finished.

“This is a major building project for our campus - one that has been a dream for a long time,” she said. "The cube allowed us to make the invitation as special as the project is. It also provided us a means of a giveaway/ keepsake and invitation together in one piece.”

The 4.25” Pop Up Cube the team chose was customized to showcase the building, the Jack and Mary DeWitt Family Science Center, front and center. Inside was an invitation to the dedication with the time, date and another photo of the new science center from a different angle. Jill and her team made use of additional space to advertise other activities that would take place inside the building over the course of the dedication weekend. Recipients included anyone who donated to the campaign to develop the building.

“We were very pleased with it,” Jill said. “It’s always a little bit of a surprise when someone opens it; they think it’s pretty cool. We’re really excited about it because it’s a fun addition to another piece of celebrating this major milestone for our institution.”

The Jack and Mary DeWitt Family Science Center will house classrooms, laboratories and faculty offices for the departments of biology, chemistry and nursing, as well as increased space for collaborative student-faculty research. The name honors Jack and Mary DeWitt of Holland, Mich., who contributed the lead gift for the 61,000-square-foot building that opened in August.
