Virginia Tech Research Institute Sends a Surprise in the Mail

Virginia Tech Research Institute Sends a Surprise in the Mail
April 1, 2020

Who: Institute for Critical Technology & Applied Science (ICTAS)

Their Industry: Higher Education

Their Audience: Heads of Offices at Virginia Tech that work with ICTAS on a frequent basis

Their Challenge: Send a thoughtful holiday greeting and build awareness for the research institute, while highlighting their biggest accomplishments of the year.

Our Solution: The Surprise Slider

The Main Pro: Surprise! - Slide out the panel and two hidden cubes unexpectedly pop out into full, dimensional shape and then stick around as desktop displays.

Graphic Designer, Amber Montgomery, and her team have used Red Paper Plane’s innovative, fun, and unique dimensional direct mail designs for 3 years. Wanting to highlight how the research center represents innovation, she felt that Red Paper Plane was a natural fit.

After receiving a Surprise Slider in a sample pack from Red Paper Plane’s website Montgomery knew it would be the design for that year’s card. “We chose it because it’s so fun and unique. Who wouldn’t love opening that?” The ease of the template made it her dream come true, and her team especially loved the online 3D model feature. “We invested a lot of money and time into these cards. Your designs are really well made, very different, so if we made a big mistake, people were going to notice. The 3D model was a huge life saver and really streamlined our artwork upload process.”

Many recipients commented on how cool and fun the design was. “We opened the mailer and thought 'this looks even better in person'. Everyone was very excited. It was really fun to see our design on the final product, and we were really happy with how they turned out.”
